Being on the committee is about being an active participant in a team, learning from it, improving by being part of it and in return, contributing to its legacy.
When you really want to influence what happens at your sports club or other local club, you should consider joining the club committee. That is particularly important when you are a parent.
As a club committee member, you are allowed to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and have more of an influence on your club’s activities.
What Is An AGM?
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is an important event. This is where the future activities for the club are decided every year. You get the opportunity to vote new members onto the committee and generally help to guide the club in the right direction.
The club’s finances are also discussed and decisions concerning the annual budget are made. The AGM is one of the most important events in your club’s annual calendar.
Being on the committee is a rewarding experience. It makes you feel that you can affect what happens in your club. At the same, you have to appreciate that being a committee member is a responsible role. Club members often expect a lot from their committee.
Depending on club rules, members may be allowed to attend the AGM. It gives them a chance to vote for new ideas and influence the direction of the club
The Role Of Parents in Club Life
If you have children, you should do your utmost to be an active member of the club your children have joined.
On occasion, parents think of a sports club as a place they can leave their children or teens while they get on with other things they would like to do. Give and take is important.
When you want to play an active role in your child’s life, it is important to take part in their leisure activities as well as their school life.
Children or teens who have parents that take part in club life often do better at club events. They feel that they are representing both the club and their family.
A Positive Influence
Parents can have a positive influence on club activities.
This is particularly true in communities where club members come from all walks of life and different backgrounds.
The more “inclusive” you can make your club, the more members it will have. A diverse club background is good for everyone concerned and can affect your entire community.
A sports club with more members has a larger pool of talent. When you can select talent from a larger group, your club has more of a chance when it comes to winning competitions.
Parents from different ethnic backgrounds often enjoy working together and are better at spotting talent.
Also, when you work together, you are much more likely to come up with different ideas for events and fundraising opportunities.
Having An Active Part in Your Child's Future
More than anything, being an active member of a club or on the committee, gives you a further chance to influence your child’s future in a positive way.
When children or young people see their parents taking on an active role, they are much more likely to become more active themselves. You may even find that they start listening to what other young members of the club think and are concerned about when it comes to club activities.
That will feed through to you. An ideas or issues that arise are easy to address during the day-to-day running of the club’s AGM.
In Conclusion
It is important to take an active interest in what you and your family does in life. Yes, being a parent and active club member are both two things you will need to dedicate time to.
Is it worth it? Yes, it is. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing your ideas put into practice and having a positive influence on the club.
Is it hard work? Yes, it can be hard work from time to time. However, it is also a lot of fun. You get the opportunity to learn new skills and take on responsibilities that influence the direction of the club.
As a parent, you will soon be realised that you can have active role to play in your child’s life in many different ways.
Being a club committee member is not for all parents, but once you get involved, it is an enjoyable experience.
